With the yen where it is in 2026, a careful traveller gets through a full day for around 12,000 yen, roughly $75, and most of the sights that define the city cost nothing: Senso-ji, Meiji Shrine, the Shibuya crossing, the free observation deck at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building.

What is free
- The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building observation decks in Shinjuku, 202 metres up, no ticket.
- Senso-ji in Asakusa and Meiji Shrine by Harajuku, both open and free.
- Shibuya crossing, Omoide Yokocho in Shinjuku, Takeshita Street, Akihabara: all free to walk.
- Yoyogi Park, Shinjuku Gyoen is ¥500 but Ueno Park and the Imperial Palace East Gardens are free.
Where the money goes
Accommodation is the variable. A dorm bed is under $50, a business hotel double is $90 to $150, and anything in Shinjuku or Ginza with a view starts around $250. Food is the opposite: eating well is cheap. A standing sushi counter, a 1,000-yen bowl of ramen and a depachika bento are the three best meals in the city and none of them costs more than $15.
Transport is a fixed small cost. A day of sightseeing on the metro comes to $5 to $8 on a Suica card. Taxis are expensive by comparison, starting near $4 and climbing fast.
